What is EN 301 489?

EN 301 489 is a multi-part ETSI standard specifying EMC requirements for radio equipment and services. Part 1 defines common technical requirements applicable to all radio equipment, while product-specific parts define the particular conditions applicable to each radio technology type. Together with the EN 300 series radio performance standards, EN 301 489 forms the complete CE marking technical test package for wireless products under RED — addressing both Article 3.1(b) EMC requirements and Article 3.2 radio performance requirements.

Real-World Testing Examples

Zigbee + BLE Smart Home Sensor — EN 301 489-17 + EN 300 328

A smart home device manufacturer needed CE RED marking for a combined Zigbee and BLE 2.4 GHz sensor. Compatible Electronics performed EN 301 489-17 V3.2.4 emissions and immunity testing at Brea, with both radios operating simultaneously for worst-case testing. ESD, radiated RF immunity, EFT/Burst, and conducted RF immunity tests were performed per EN 301 489-1 V2.2.3 common requirements. Radiated emissions in transmit mode confirmed both radios within EN 300 328 V2.2.2 spectral limits. The combined EN 301 489-17 + EN 300 328 RED package was delivered with parallel FCC Part 15C (ANSI C63.10) test reports in the same session.

LoRa 868 MHz Sensor — EN 301 489-3 + EN 300 220

A European IoT company needed CE RED marking for a LoRaWAN soil sensor operating at 868 MHz. Compatible Electronics performed EN 301 489-3 V2.1.1 emissions and immunity testing at Lake Forest/Silverado — radiated emissions in standby mode, ESD immunity, EFT/Burst, conducted RF immunity, and power frequency magnetic field. EN 300 220-2 V2.4.1 radio performance testing (EIRP, frequency accuracy, occupied bandwidth, duty cycle) was performed in the same session. The complete EN 301 489-3 + EN 300 220 RED package supported the manufacturer’s Declaration of Conformity for EU market entry.

Wireless Microphone System — EN 301 489-9 + EN 301 357

A professional audio equipment manufacturer needed CE RED marking for a wireless microphone system operating in the 700 MHz UHF band. Compatible Electronics performed EN 301 489-9 V1.4.1 EMC testing at Lake Forest/Silverado — emissions in transmit and standby modes, and immunity tests per EN 301 489-1 common requirements. ETSI EN 301 357-1 V1.4.1 and EN 301 357-2 V1.4.1 radio performance testing confirmed compliance with the cordless audio device essential requirements. The combined RED test package was delivered for the EU Declaration of Conformity.
