What is IEC 60335-1?

IEC 60335-1 is the general safety requirements standard for household and similar electrical appliances. It establishes baseline safety requirements — including insulation, temperature, mechanical stability, protection against access to live parts, and fire resistance — that apply to virtually all domestic appliances. Part 2 standards (such as IEC 60335-2-29 for battery chargers and IEC 60335-2-82 for amusement machines) are always used alongside Part 1 for product-specific requirements.

IEC 60335-1 is essential for CE marking under the EU Low Voltage Directive (2014/35/EU), UKCA marking, RCM marking for Australia/New Zealand, and market access in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC/GSO). Most appliances also require EMC testing — emissions per EN 55014-1, harmonic current per IEC 61000-3-2, and voltage flicker per IEC 61000-3-3.

💡 Part 1 + Part 2: IEC 60335-1 always applies together with the applicable Part 2 product-specific standard. Part 2 may modify, replace, or supplement Part 1 requirements for the specific product type.
