What is EN 50270?

EN 50270 is the EMC product-family standard for electrical apparatus used for the detection and measurement of combustible gases, toxic gases, and oxygen. It is published by CENELEC and is harmonised under the EU EMC Directive 2014/30/EU, as well as being relevant under the ATEX Directive for equipment used in explosive atmospheres. EN 50270 covers both emissions and immunity requirements specific to gas detection instruments and systems.

Gas detection equipment operates in environments subject to significant electromagnetic disturbances — industrial plants, refineries, chemical facilities, and confined spaces — while simultaneously needing to maintain detection accuracy and alarm reliability. EN 50270 addresses this by specifying immunity test levels appropriate for industrial environments, referencing the IEC 61000-4 immunity test suite alongside emissions requirements. Compatible Electronics holds accreditation for EN 50270 at the Brea facility, enabling CE marking of gas detection apparatus for the EU market.

🔎 EN 50270 and safety-critical performance: Gas detection apparatus is safety-critical — a false alarm or failure to detect during a disturbance could have serious consequences. EN 50270 uses performance criteria specific to safety devices: the equipment must continue to function correctly (detect and alarm) during and after all immunity tests. Our EMC Design Consulting team can advise on EN 50270 performance requirements and pre-compliance testing strategies.
