What is IoT Device Testing?

IoT devices present unique certification challenges: they typically combine multiple wireless radios (WiFi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, Z-Wave, LoRa, NFC, sub-GHz), generate unintentional RF emissions from onboard processors and power supplies, and span use cases from body-worn wearables to outdoor infrastructure. Regulatory compliance requires testing each radio to its applicable standard, evaluating the assembled device for unintentional emissions, and performing RF exposure evaluation. Compatible Electronics manages all of this in one place.

Real-World Testing Examples

Smart Home Hub — WiFi 6 + BT + Zigbee

A consumer electronics company needed FCC and ISED certification for a smart home hub combining WiFi 6 (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz), Bluetooth 5.2, and Zigbee. Compatible Electronics developed a test plan covering FCC Part 15B, Part 15C, and Part 15E (non-DFS channels only), tested in worst-case simultaneous operation mode. RSS-247 Issue 3 and ICES-003 Issue 7 reports were produced in parallel for ISED, with a single coordinated FCC ID filing package delivered to the TCB.

Industrial IIoT Sensor — LoRa + BLE

A manufacturing automation company required FCC Certification and CE marking for a battery-powered IIoT sensor transmitting data over LoRaWAN and accepting BLE configuration commands. Testing covered FCC Part 15.247 for LoRa, FCC Part 15C for BLE, ETSI EN 300 220 for EU LoRa 868 MHz, and EN 300 328 for BLE at 2.4 GHz. EN 301 489-3 EMC testing completed the RED package. RF exposure per RSS-102 confirmed MPE compliance.

Medical IoT Wearable — BLE + NFC

A digital health company required FCC and ISED certification for a wrist-worn health monitor containing BLE and NFC. Testing covered FCC Part 15C for BLE, FCC Part 15.225 for NFC, and RSS-210 Issue 10 for both radios. RF exposure evaluation confirmed MPE limits were met at 20 cm for BLE and at contact distance for NFC per FCC OET 65 guidance. Pre-compliance testing identified spurious emissions from the switching regulator resolved through firmware duty cycle adjustment before final certification.

RF Exposure for IoT Devices

RF exposure requirements depend on wireless technology, frequency, transmit power, and intended use. Compatible Electronics provides:

MPE & Field Measurements

  • MPE calculations and measurements per FCC OET 65 Supplement C
  • RF exposure evaluation per RSS-102 Issue 5 + A1 (Canada) and EN 62311 (Europe)
  • IEEE C95.3-2021 measurement procedures

Device Configurations

  • Separation distance determination for fixed-mount, portable, and body-worn configurations
