EN 55103-1

EN 55103-1 specifies electromagnetic disturbance limits and measurement methods for professional audio, video, audio-visual, and entertainment lighting control apparatus. This article covers its scope, environments, and Compatible Electronics' accredited testing. Part of the Compatible Electronics Learning Center.

What is EN 55103-1?

EN 55103-1 is the European harmonized product family emissions standard for professional audio, video, audio-visual, and entertainment lighting control apparatus — the "pro AV" category. It is the Part 1 (emissions) standard in the EN 55103 series, with Part 2 (EN 55103-2) covering immunity.

The standard was developed because professional AV equipment operates in environments that differ significantly from consumer products — concert venues, broadcast studios, theaters, conference centers, and similar facilities. These environments have different electromagnetic characteristics and different sensitivity requirements than residential or industrial locations. Compatible Electronics provides dedicated professional AV (EN 55103) testing services.

Equipment and Environments Covered

EN 55103-1 applies to professional-grade equipment intended for use in specified environments:

E1

Environment 1 — Residential

Products used in residential locations connected to a public low-voltage supply. The most restrictive emission limits apply. This includes high-end home theater equipment marketed as "professional" that is used in residential settings.

E2

Environment 2 — Commercial and Light Industrial

Typical commercial environments such as offices, studios, small production facilities. Moderate emission limits reflecting the electromagnetic environment of these locations.

E3

Environment 3 — Urban Outdoors / Mobile

Equipment intended for use at outdoor events, in mobile production vehicles, or in temporary installations at public locations. Specific emission limits account for the different electromagnetic environment and proximity to public radio reception.

E4

Environment 4 — Controlled

Dedicated facilities such as broadcast studios, post-production facilities, and concert halls with controlled electromagnetic environments. Less stringent limits reflect the controlled nature of these installations and the absence of general public broadcast reception within the facility.
